25 Years of WPS: Shrinking Civic Space, Growing Threats

25 Years of WPS: What Happens When Civic Space Shrinks & Threats Grow?

As we mark a quarter-century of the Women, Peace & Security agenda, a critical question emerges: How do we sustain commitments to inclusive peacebuilding when civic space is rapidly shrinking worldwide?
Join us for a timely breakfast dialogue:

📅 October 29, 2025 | 8:15-9:45 AM
📍 Permanent Mission of the Netherlands, NYC

The Challenge: Women peacebuilders continue mediating disputes, facilitating humanitarian access, and strengthening communities, often at great personal risk. Yet they remain excluded from formal peace processes, operating in environments where their safety is threatened and their voices marginalised.

The Conversation: Hear directly from women human rights defenders navigating restricted civic space in fragile settings. Together with SIPRI, Cordaid, and local partners, we'll explore:
✦ How WPS can adapt to contested contexts without losing ground
✦ What diplomatic missions can do to provide context-specific, protective support
✦ How to support local action and leadership

What You'll Gain:
Localized insights from South Sudan and Colombia and other contexts
Actionable recommendations for diplomatic engagement
Policy guidance to inform WPS implementation beyond 2025
